Gain Actionable Insights on Infrastructure Performance

Improve efficiency and plan for change effectively with Lighthouse’s Independent Discovery and Analytics Engagement

Thinking of moving to the cloud?  Before you do, you need a clear direction on how to prioritize cloud migration and invest in areas that give you the highest ROI.

The Lighthouse Independent Discovery and Analytics (IDA) is an infrastructure analytics engagement that can give you clear visibility into your legacy applications, physical hardware, and consumption rates of server, storage and network resources.  The IDA is a comprehensive, transformative point-of-view and framework that quickly analyzes an IT environment and provides recommendations to reduce the cost to store, access, and deliver data, improve alignment within the business, and more effectively manage key applications within one or more lines of business.

  • All storage state and performance information: The IDA works for just about any array from any vendor to render a normalized view of capacity, configuration, LUN performance, reads, writes, CPUs of the controllers, caching, bandwidth and many other metrics. The key point is to determine the IO activity down to the LUN level and map patterns of data flow from the hosts through the array.
  • All server state information: CPUs, memory, adapters, operating systems, firmware levels, host capacity, configuration and network pathing. Optionally, we can gather performance information (perfmon/nmon) for physical and virtual images. We can then correlate everything into a single view.
  • File statistics: Time stamp activity of creates, reads and updates of all file type data, so we can identify opportunities for reclamation, archiving, compression and (swag) at de-duplication.
  • VMWare stats: We inventory the entire virtualized environment and then map it back to physical servers to VMware clusters—to look at CPU and memory utilization physical—to virtual. We also provide a mapping of virtual datastores to the physical underlying storage to look at how efficiently the virtualization layer is utilizing physical resources.
  • Complete listing of every service running (Linux or Windows) on the hosts or virtual hosts: This gives us a sense of all the applications and tools running during the time period of our engagement.
  • A complete listing of Sybase, SQL Server and Oracle Databases running in the environment, which includes users, allocations, usage, growth, duplication and more.
  • A complete documentation of the data path: HBA, firmware levels, WWNs, through the switch to backend LUNs.
  • Ensuring analytics are well performing and/or planning for modernization projects
  • Planning the movement to converged and hyper-converged from traditional legacy client-server-based deployments
  • Planning for cloud and hybrid-cloud evaluation and execution—helping to define requirements with a cost/benefit analysis
  • Planning and execution for data center consolidation, relocation and colocation projects
  • Determining and prioritizing actions for capex and opex reductions while improving asset life cycle and financial management
  • Simplification and rationalization of virtualization software layers, including software defined environments
  • Comprehensive understanding of databases while uncovering opportunities for license cost reductions
  • Addressing issues around disaster recovery, general availability, data protection and application performance
  • Planning for technical refreshes, as well as providing before and after analysis for significant changes
  • Planning and executing data and application migrations
  • Defining and setting tiering policies for data, storage and overall service levels
  • Defining cloud object storage strategies, including replacement/modernization of NAS (NFS and CIFS)
  • Determining archive strategies, including opportunities to reduce costs through data reclamation and retention policies

The IDA is delivered in a workshop setting facilitated by our experts, using a data and visually immersive collaboration. Together, we explore the analytic dashboards and the relationships between applications, data and their underlying infrastructure components.

  • The results are displayed in a dashboard of unified analytics which provides an end-to-end view of all devices, all locations regardless of geography, and a common operational picture.
  • We provide a comparison of your environment to others of similar industry and size to help you determine a clear direction and prioritization schedule.
  • Our experts can help you understand the relationships between capacities, utilization, data access patterns, availability and configuration issues from hardware platforms through virtualization layers, applications and data.

Now, your IT Department can gain insight into the environment to pinpoint inefficiencies in both performance and utilization.

Infrastructure analytics can play a key role in increasing visibility into key processes, allowing you to reduce costs, identify opportunities and drive business objectives. With the increasing importance of IT in the modern enterprise, CIOs can look to infrastructure analytics to gain wins, justify their efforts and prove to the business that their strategies are effective. By working with a trusted partner like Lighthouse, IT leaders can maximize their analytics efforts, drive innovation in the organization and help the company stay competitive.
